Brunch and Learn Wednesday, April 24. Brunch at 9:45 a.m., talk at 10:00 a.m. “The Grand Art of Deception” Presenter: Bob Killgore Have you heard about the plans to saw Manhattan in half? Why? To keep the island from sinking under its weighty population! In 1824, hundreds of people enlisted for this worthy endeavor to bisect Manhattan and reposition its halves. Were they fooled? And how! Do you know about the Cardiff Giant, the ten-foot, four-inch- tall colossus trapped in gypsum? According to the story, this enormous man roamed the world in ancient times. A crew had to carve “him” out in 1906. Our history is full of outsize hoaxes such as these, the most fantastic the more fascinating. The “star” of these deceivers was P.T. Barnum, but there were many others whose memories have largely been lost in the sands of time. How did they invent their tales—and how did they get away with them? Our presenter, Bob Killgore, is the board president and curriculum consultant for Cedar Crest College’s Institute for Learning in Retirement. He is a retired history teacher at William Allen High School who has also been a guide at historic sites. A dynamic speaker, he will share his irresistible enthusiasm with us. Come hear these fabulous, true stories at our brunch and learn. To make a reservation call 610-821-8722 by April 22. Admission is $3 per person and includes the talk and brunch.
