Summer is often a season of renewal, a chance to slow down, spend time with family and friends, enjoy vacation, and recharge. For our Jewish community in the Lehigh Valley, summer is also a season of preparation: a time to look ahead and ask how each of us will help strengthen Jewish life in the year ahead.

As we prepare for our 2027 Annual Campaign for Jewish Needs and program year, we are called not only to plan events and initiatives, but also to renew our own commitment to living proudly, visibly, and actively as Jews. At a time when Jewish identity is increasingly visible and, at times, increasingly challenged, our response cannot be to retreat. It must be to show up. Each of us has a role in ensuring that Jewish life in the Lehigh Valley stays vibrant, welcoming, secure, and strong.

The Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley has long served as our community’s convener, bringing together synagogues, agencies, schools, community partners, and individuals around a shared vision for Jewish life. Federation is also our community’s safety net, ensuring that no one faces hardship alone and that essential services, security initiatives, educational opportunities, and care for our most vulnerable remain available when they are needed most. It connects us to one another, to Israel, and to Jewish communities around the world in moments of celebration and in times of crisis.

But Federation alone cannot build the future. Strong Jewish communities are built by people who choose to participate.

Show up with pride. Be unapologetically Jewish. Be visible in your Jewish identity. Light Shabbat candles. Wear a Magen David. Celebrate our holidays. Share our stories. Every visible expression of Jewish life sends a powerful message to the world that we are here, we belong, and we are not going anywhere.

Show up for community. Attend community events. Fill the room. Welcome newcomers. Bring a friend. Volunteer your time and talents. Support our synagogues, schools, and agencies. Jewish continuity is built one relationship at a time, by people who keep showing up for one another.

Show up as a leader. Leadership is more than a title; it is a choice. Chair a committee. Mentor an emerging leader. Organize an event. Or simply be the person who raises a hand when help is needed. Our community grows stronger when more people recognize that leadership is not reserved for a select few; it is a shared responsibility.

Show up with your voice. Speak with courage. Stand against antisemitism. Build bridges. Support Israel while embracing thoughtful dialogue. Whether through conversations with neighbors, letters to the editor, advocacy, or meetings with elected officials, every respectful conversation helps build understanding and push back against hatred.

Show up as an engaged citizen. Vote. Advocate. Participate. Jewish tradition teaches that caring for our own community also means caring for the broader society we share. Democracy is strongest when good people show up.
Show up through generosity. Every gift to Federation is more than a donation. It is a declaration that Jewish life matters. It is an investment in Jewish continuity that strengthens security, supports families and seniors, inspires the next generation, responds in times of crisis, and helps Jewish life flourish throughout the Lehigh Valley and beyond.

Summer is the perfect time to ask this important question: How will I show up this year? Perhaps it means increasing your annual gift, joining a committee, volunteering, participating in an advocacy initiative, attending more Jewish programs, or reaching out to someone still searching for their place in our community. Every person matters. Every act of engagement counts. Every commitment strengthens us all.

As we kick off our 2027 campaign and program year, let us choose to show up with pride, generosity, compassion, courage, and purpose. Let us show up for one another, for Israel, for future generations, and for the Jewish community we are privileged to build together.

The Jewish Federation will continue to convene, connect, and care for our community. But the future of Jewish life in the Lehigh Valley depends on more than one organization; it depends on each of us embracing our role. A strong Jewish community is not built by institutions alone. It is built every day by people who choose to show up.

This summer, let us prepare together for a year of meaningful Jewish engagement. Let us show up for our children and grandchildren, for our neighbors, and for the future of Jewish life in the Lehigh Valley. Together, we will ensure that our community remains strong, welcoming, secure, and filled with hope for generations to come.
